The 2019 growing season began with mild temperatures and below-average rainfall, continuing the dry pattern seen across much of South Australia. Some late spring rain arrived just in time to support canopy growth and vineyard health, offering limited but welcome reprieve. January brought a heatwave, but fortunately it occurred early enough in the season to avoid damage, with the fruit still in its early stages of development.
As the season progressed, conditions stabilised into a mild and dry finish, creating an ideal environment for extended ripening. This long hang time allowed for strong flavour development and retention of acidity, particularly important in a year marked by low yields. Crop levels were well down due to a combination of weather-related stress and small berry size, but fruit quality remained high.
The whites from 2019 are bright and focused, with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Fiano showing good intensity and line. The reds are concentrated and structured, benefitting from the low yields and steady ripening conditions. While volumes were tight, the 2019 vintage has delivered wines with depth, clarity and a strong sense of site.
