2022 K1 Merlot

Story: Open canopies and low yields at our Kuitpo vineyard ensure that our Merlot grapes are matured to optimum ripeness. From 30 year old vines the fruit is destemmed and fermented in small batch open fermenters for 7 days before pressing into French oak hogsheads to mature for 18 months.

Vintage:  2022 Higher than average rainfall over winter followed by a warm and dry spring resulting in even budburst and a textbook start for the vintage. A cool but relatively dry summer gave us beautiful even ripening conditions. This slow ripening allows great flavour development and retention of natural acidity.  

Nose: A fragrant mix of plum, blackberry, and boysenberry, accented by a subtle touch of eucalyptus for added freshness. 

Palate: Juicy mulberry and tart cranberry meet vibrant pomegranate and a gentle hint of white pepper, creating a medium-bodied wine with a silky texture and balanced finish.

Oak maturation: 20% new French oak for 18 months.
